Few women are involved in scientific endeavors, but Rosalind defies that rule by working as a biochemist in the early 1900s. Having lost her parents to cholera, she is passionate about clean water and determined to educate everyone about its importance.

Rosalind works with a scientist who is fighting with Jersey City regarding how to safely get clean water to each resident. Nick is the water commissioner and wants to keep things as they are because Rosalind’s method has not been tested on humans. Neither can deny the attraction between them till an unexpected betrayal puts their budding relationship to the test.

This book was an interesting look at a point in history that isn’t frequently discussed—how big cities dealt with rapid growth affecting the city infrastructure at the turn of the century. Readers of Roseanna White’s books will love this story, which includes discussion questions.
