Johnson is the director of ministries at Lakewood Church in Houston and the founder of the Champions Club, a comprehensive facility for special-needs children. He also is the father of three children, including Connor—who, until the age of 2—was like every other boy his age. Something snapped, and suddenly Connor stopped talking, became withdrawn, and was diagnosed with autism.

Johnson shares the roller-coaster ride he and his wife experienced as they sought help. Thankfully, their journey has been peppered with answered prayers. Johnson uses this book as an opportunity to discuss how churches can do a better job with special-needs children. Rather than seeing autism as a burden, Johnson views it as a gift from God.

“I celebrate Connor and every child, teen, and adult who fulfills their purpose in spite of their challenges,” he writes. “My senses are alive for the hurting, broken, and forgotten. My unexpected challenge awakened me.”
