Maribel Cordoba—great-granddaughter of William and Mary Elizabeth Lytton—sails with her Papa until Captain Jean Beaumont intercepts their vessel. After the conflict, he learns a female child has been brought aboard.

A privateer, not a pirate, Jean refuses to harm children, so Maribel remains. But this precocious female makes herself at home, soon becoming the best lookout in Jean’s crew. Disaster forces them apart, and both assume the other dead until, years later, Maribel reenters Jean’s life and he must save her again.

Not everyone seeking a new start in life came from England, and Y’Barbo deftly portrays the tensions between France, Spain, and England as descendants of the Mayflower passengers settle the New World. The heroine’s age in Part 1 of the story and the sweet romance years later in Part 2 makes this high seas adventure enjoyable for YA or adult readers.
